Hello,

I need to figure out what manual processes (if any) I need to build around inventory re-adjustment and order processing. In order to do that I need to understand the inventory behavior a little more. If it makes a difference, I'm mostly doing inventory at the variant level and I'm using PP Standard for checkout.

At what point is the item actually taken out of inventory? When the user puts it in their cart? When they go to the checkout screen? At some other point?

Under what circumstances (if any) are items automatically put back into inventory by CV?  How are abandoned carts dealt with if the inventory change is initially committed when the user puts the item into their cart? I did check the setting that a cart lasts until someone closes their browser.

Under what conditions is an order created but has a status of unpaid? Does that mean they filled out checkout (one step in my case) and pushed the next button but then didn't do the PayPal steps to complete the transaction?

Also, is the paid status in the case of PayPal payments standard reliant on the user allowing PayPal to send them back to the accounts page on our site, or is there some kind of back end communication going on that updates the paid status in our system even if the user closes their browser before PayPal can re-direct them to our site?

Thanks.

Hi,

The stock quantity is only reduced when an order receives an order status of "paid", so if a customer added products to the cart and never completed the checkout process and actually paid for their goods the stock level would not be reduced.

PayPal sends us an instant payment notification (IPN) once they have taken payment, we then validate this and if they have taken payment we mark the order as paid, send confirmation emails, reduce stock levels and make the order appear in the order history. This is independent of the customer returning to your site, so if the customer paid on the PayPal site and never returned to your site it won't make a difference.

Abandoned carts or orders that are never completed (go to payment gateway but credit card declined, etc) are never shown in the order history. So to answer your original question you should not need to have any manual processes around reducing stock levels when an order is placed online, CV should be able to handle it all.

Thanks
Nigel.

Fantastic. Better than I had hoped for. We'll have to educate our customers that inventory isn't pulled for them until they pay, but that's a small matter. Far better from a process standpoint this way anyway.
