Hello!

I am trying to understand how you identify the products. I would have expected it to be by ModelNumber, but it appears to be by   ModelName and/or ProductSeoName?

I loaded all my products, and each has a unique ModelNumber, but some wound up with the same ModelName. If I add them to the cart, I get one item with Qty=2 instead of each item of Qty=1.

Also, the Recently Viewed Products just shows one of the two products, and the page link is the same for both.

Is there some setting to change this? As a db person, this seems wrong to me - there should be a unique key.

Am I missing something?

Thanks!
Alex

Hi Alex,

Which context are you asking how we identify products? Internally we generally use the product ID of the product, when importing  via CSV we check the modelNumber and if a product has a matching model number we update that product rather than add it. In the store front we load the product by product seo name, so this needs to be unique , I imagine that is the issue with the recently viewed link you mention below.

Could you let me know the URL's of the products you are having issues with so we can take a look?

Thanks
Nigel.

Hello Nigel,

Sorry, didn't mean to be critical - I love your product!

The issue I ran into was when viewing the cart, which as you say is by product seo name, which is derived from the ModelName if you don't enter it. I can make the seo names unique, that is not a problem. What threw me is that you weren't using product ID, but it's a moot point because this is just for the cart display.

We have suppliers that sometimes change the names on the products (for the same product) and I can see us tweaking the seo names in the future, so both of these things are not immutable. I guess it would help if the seo name was required to be unique, but there may be people who don't want that - I don't know.

The important one is the Order detail, and since that is by Product ID, it won't matter if we change the other fields, it will still show the correct product.

Thanks for the clarification, and a great product.
Alex

Sorry to beat on this, Nigel, but you may want to look into it:

I just looked at the products that have duplicate ModelName, and about half of them wound up with a "uniquified" seo name with a 1 appended on one of the entries, but the other half wound up as duplicate seo names. So I guess you have some logic to make them unique, but it's not working all the time. All of them were imported as a csv file. I did not provide any seo names in the file, just ModelName. They were all imported in the same file. I don't see a pattern - some were consecutive, some were not - as to why they got a 1 appended or not.

Probably not high in your priorities, but figured I would mention it :-)

In any case, I will make all my names and seo names unique now.

Thanks!

Alex

Hi Alex

Could you send over your CSV file to me, mark@cartviper.com or nigel@cartviper.com

We would be interested in importing this ourselves to see the issue. In theory we should always generate a unique SEO name.

Regards

Mark
