I have a client that uses both UPS and USPS for shipping.  Because there was no option built into CartViper to allow the selection of insurance in the shipping rates, we added a shipping surcharge to the items to cover the insurance.  My client now wants to have the insurance optional since many customers are complaining about the upcharge.

Some additional background:  The client not only sells product that gets shipping insurance, but also services customers own product that also needs insurance.  You can't insure simply by the cart total as a service item might only be $25, but the value of the item is $100 and thus needs to be insured for $100.

How can I provide shipping insurance as an optional charge?

Hi Jon

We have an idea that may be suitable for your client.

What if on the cart page when the user clicks the checkout button we first show a modal window which allows them to select an optional shipping insurance. The customer would be able to select the amount of insurance they would like to add to their order.

A hidden category would allow you to manage to the shipping insurance items like a regular product and you could define the price etc.

If the customer selects an insurance it would just add this product to their cart before taking them to the checkout to complete the transaction.
