Also it's a little wierd that when I'm returned from paypal, I'm no longer logged into the portal as the purchaser's account that i performed the order under.  I'm back to being anonymous.  Is this because of the bounce back between https and http do you know?  Do you recommend to keep the store in https or http, or has this caused any problems?

It appears the IPN issue was the sandbox, I ran a test through production and it worked to get the order to paid.  I'm still having the issue where when i return from paypal the buyers account is no longer logged in, the checkout is http so it is doing the http (my website) -> https (paypal) -> http (my website)

Hi

The HTTP/HTTPS shouldn't be an issue.

Are you returning to the site with a different url? Do both urls have the www. prefix? Can you paste into the forum the url you are on when you look at the checkout page and the url shown after you return from Paypal?

Perfect that was the answer, I had canonical alias's turned on and it needed to be set to redirect to handle the situation.  Thanks for the excellent support!
