within the store admin, when you click on products:

it would make it a lot easier if the 1st picture of the item would appear on the products page to the left of the model number.

Hi

I can add this feature request to the issue tracker and then we'll add this into a future release.
Does any one else want to vote for this feature as well?

At the moment when in edit mode in the store front you will be able to see the products along with the first image so you kind of have a work around at the moment.

I am not sure what you mean.  I am in edit mode and I clicked on store admin and do not see the first image.

Hi,
When you are logged into your store as a "store admin" and browsing the store catalog in "edit" mode; next to each product title there is a pencil icon. Clicking this will take you to the product edit page for that product. The icon will appear next to the product title in the catalog and product details page. See screenshot below:
