Allow CSV product import to handle duplicate modelnumbers by depending on other criteria....e.g..Unitcost, Modelname, IsArchived

Having considered this it is not something we would look to add to the road map, the update feature works on a unique identifier of the model number to them attempt to fall back on additional fields could lead to unwanted updates.

Nigel, I think you may of misunderstood. Of course you need to keep the unique modelnumber identifier. However, CV DOES allow duplicate products with the same modelnumber. At present it is impossible to archive, delete or update duplicates without scripts because the CSV import rejects.

By adding additional criteria could update or delete dupes by defining additional specific criteria. e.g. delete where modelnumber = "abc123" and and modelname = "red onion" and unitcost = 0

From my limited knowledge of how relational database queries work I would of thought the additional definitions would reduce the risk of updating incorrect records and possibly prevent the creation of the dupes which are the root cause of the problem?

Hi

Cart Viper does support creating a custom interface that would be used to import products. We have created these in the past for other customers that have had other specific requirements. So that would be a possibility.

As you can see we need to be able to find just a single product from a model number in order to be able to update the item during the import.
In the back office we do not enforce any model number check, this is to allow maximum flexibility for customers that are not operating with unique values.

Changing the import routine to a composite identifier for a product isn't something we are going to implement into the core. This would be too confusing for existing customers and there isn't any demand from other users.
The best solution is to create a custom import routine that is tailored to your requirements. This would still allow you to upgrade to future versions of the CV but give you the customisation you need.

Regards

Mark
